Hot Air Balloon Regatta Ajijic 2019
This was our first time at the Ajijic Hot Air Balloon Regatta and it could not have been a more beautiful day with a more fun-filled crowd. Intricately designed balloons, tasty food, great weather and an awesome turn out made this an unforgettable day. This annual event takes place the second week of September on the
Cruz Azul soccer field located in Ajijic just East of El Torito and Plaza Bugambilias.
There are groups of local businesses and families who send their hot air-filled, paper lanterns off throughout the day. Some go soaring across the Ajijic skyline, while others aren't as lucky and end up bursting into flames before they're even airborne. We can't help but wonder if this type of event would be allowed to take place in the United States or Canada. There were several times that we saw circular wicks on fire falling from the sky and the balloons that caught on fire on the soccer field would flail about inches from spectators. At the end of the day, no one was injured during the 2019 regatta (that we know of), it was a fantastic spectacle, and there are always officials on hand to make sure everyone stays safe.

Come early and avoid the crowds, grab a cold beer, and enjoy some of the local taco stands, tortas ahogadas, chips, and cotton candy. The festivities begin with some of the smaller balloons, getting bigger and more intricate throughout the night. We thought the paper lantern light show in Thailand was a sight to see, but some of these handmade balloons at the Regata de Globos looked like they must have had a big team spending weeks creating them, and it's a wonder how they even got them airborne!

Watching children's faces in awe with some of these balloons stretching stories high, cracking traditional confetti eggs on the heads of their friends and family, running around and enjoying the afternoon was worth the trip in itself. Like many of Ajijic's outdoor events, the Hot Air Balloon Regatta is a great place to hang out, mingle, and meet people.
