Mexican Mother's Day 2014

Today, Saturday, May 10th is Mexican Mother’s Day or Dia de Las Madres. Sunday, May 11th is Mother’s Day up north.

I have been celebrating both Mother’s Days since we moved to Ajijic, Lake Chapala in 1994.

When the children were in school Dia de Las Madres was a very big deal. An entire afternoon was set aside with days of planning and preparation including poems, skits, food, special drinks, flowers, and homemade cards some of which were read aloud so there was not a dry eye in the house.

I remember these Mexican Dia de Las Madres with great warmth and appreciation. It is worth noting that there are no Dias del Padres in Mexico. Go figure.

We would then celebrate the “regular” Mother’s Day with presents and a nice dinner either out or prepared at home by the family. I have been asked what I would like for Mother’s Day and have dutifully submitted my list.

Here in Ajijic, Lake Chapala many restaurants are offering special menus for either or both.

I think of my mother most days but I think of her particularly at this time of year and remain grateful that I had such a wonderful mother in my life for so long. I miss her every day and am happy we had such a wonderful, loving relationship which I now enjoy with my own children.

I feel very lucky that my children appreciate me while I am here. All we mothers want is to have our children around us.  Our son and his wife from Toronto are not here but I know I will hear from them on Skype on  Mother’s Day.

Last night I had dinner with both my daughters and one of my daughter is making me lunch and dinner for us today.  She is also taking the dog to the vet and doing the shopping.

Happy Mother’s Day to our daughter, Tiffany, too.

Happy Mother’s Day y Feliz Dia de Las Madres a todos!
