Yesterday’s torrential rains were crazy. I just came across this article in Spanish that might explain some of what is going on with this very unusual weather. The Google translated version is below…

Provide two months of winter storms

REFORM / Writing

Cd. De Mexico (March 14, 2015) – In full transition to the spring season, snowfall will continue throughout the weekend, while winter storms will spread over the next two months, warned the National Weather Service (SMN) .

Juan Manuel Caballero, general coordinator of the SMN, explained that several weather events such as cold fronts, masses of cold air and moisture generated hail, snowfall in the higher areas, waterfalls snow, strong wind, whirlwinds, waterspouts and even tornadoes.

Within three days there will be severe weather, with heavy rains intense in 22 Mexican states, in addition to possible snow in mountainous areas, thunderstorms and strong winds.

Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Zacatecas, Nuevo León, Hidalgo, Mexico State, Michoacán, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Colima, Jalisco, Queretaro, Tamaulipas and Veracruz, are some of the states where strong to intense rains are forecast.

He said that as part of the transitional phenomena of the season in last week hail fell in the Federal District and State of Mexico and in Morelia and Uruapan, Michoacan.

Meanwhile, snowfall forced the closure of the Mexico-Puebla highway, while in Ocotlan, Jalisco, forming a funnel cloud features tornado was reported.

“The satellite images and detected the presence of severe storms in the vicinity of Lake Chapala, together with the effect of topography, this funnel cloud appeared. Therefore, do not rule out the possibility that in our territory are generating this type of severe storms over the next two months, “said Juan Manuel Caballero.

As cold fronts, explained that so far there have been 41 of 50 predicted, and that for the March-May quarter entry of 15 frontal systems are expected.

So despondent was I after reading this article that I checked my usual Ajijic Weather Site www.accuweather.com and it was much more positive about the upcoming weather.

It is unheard of for us to have this kind of weather in March so I don’t want anyone to think that this is the norm.

On the plus side the lake is filling up nicely which is very good for our community of Ajijic, Lake Chapala.
