Wal-Mart in Ajijic, Lake Chapala, Mexico

Wal-Mart in Ajijic, Lake Chapala, Mexico

Having lived in Ajijic, Lake Chapala for over 14 years my experience of the alledged joys of Wal-Mart shopping is limited.

In fact, the first time I visited a Wal-Mart store was in Whitby, a small community just outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I had returned to Toronto to help my son set up his first apartment and put the finishing touches on his décor (and I use the word loosely).

We made a list of necessary items which were quite different. Mine included items such as cleaning supplies and plates, glasses and maybe a toaster and his was various apparently vital Xbox paraphernalia.

Off we went with every credit card at our disposal in hand and navigated up and down every aisle filling more than two large shopping carts of wonderful surprises. We got everything on our list and a good deal more. (Now if you have lived in Ajijic, Lake Chapala for any length of time you know that when you make your list of maybe 8 chores to be achieved you will be very lucky indeed to achieve 4.)

As we approached the check out counter I started to experience a panic attack because we had bought everything from furniture to j-cloths. You have all seen the commercial of the delighted yet skeptical shopper shouting to her husband “Start the car! Start the car!” This commercial contains truth in advertising as I was staggered and delighted at the total cost of our purchases being so very low. I too assumed some mistake in our favor had occurred.

My son and I were both thrilled as we managed to negotiate with great difficulty all our precious articles into his apartment which, or course, took several trips. We were particularly pleased with the quality of our purchases. At Wal-Mart you have the wonderful option of selecting high quality merchandise at very reasonable prices. Also there is junk at even lower prices but the choice is yours to make.

When I left to return to Ajijic, Lake Chapala, I took great comfort knowing my son was now happily ensconced in a comfortable well equipped space with all necessary bells and whistles and of course, a fully outfitted state of the art Xbox.

Now that you have read my story you can imagine my mixed feelings about a Wal-Mart opening here in our quaint little unspoiled village of Ajijic.

I am not sure I would have voted for a Wal-Mart opening in Ajijic Lake Chapala but now that it is opening imminently (if the traffic issued is resolved to everyone’s satisfaction) I will be one of the first in line.
